This is a medium fast rod with plenty of reserve power. As you would expect from Bob Meiser, the cosmetics and finish are superb and the wooden butt grip is a joy to hold. I like the slightly added weight that this gives as it really helps balance the length of this rod.
The 5 sections make the rod tube great for easy transporting. The only downside with 5 pieces is that, when I put the rod in my car, I had to break it into three pieces. I found that when I broke the rod down with two sections and three sections taped together, the three sections were too long for my car. This meant I had to break the rod down to a single piece, and two, two-section parts.
I particularly liked the depth of power in this rod. It really handled the GrandSpey line easily, and that was with 15ft of T-14 on the front end. I thought the Windcutter was a little short on this long powerful rod, though the weight was okay.
For most people, the MidSpey would be the best line choice.
Summary
This is an easy casting rod that should suit most caster's style. It needs a longer head length than most 14ft rods and is great for sinking tips. For me, it is probably a little heavy for a floating line only rod, though it takes the GrandSpey so well, that it will probably suit most casters getting into a floating long belly line for the first time, very well indeed.
